Jersey, between England and France, is the largest of the Channel Islands, with Saint-Hélier as its capital. It covers an area of 118.2 km2 and has a population of 106,500. Nicknamed the ‘Isle of Flowers’, this autonomous dependency of the United Kingdom combines British and French cultures, and is renowned for its beaches, cliffside walking trails, inland valleys and historic castles.
Located just 22 kilometres from the French coast, Jersey is the second closest part of the UK to France, after Alderney.

Mont Orgueil Castle

Mont Orgueil Castle is located on the Island of Jersey at the south-eastern end of the parish of Saint-Martin in the commune of Gourey. It protected Jersey from French invasion just over 600 years ago. Explore this network of staircases and secret rooms to discover hidden treasures and breathtaking views over the island.

Elizabeth Castle

An integral part of Jersey Heritage, the organisation that manages Jersey's heritage, Elizabeth Castle is accessible by walk at low tide and by ferry taxi across at high tide. Elizabeth Castle is the perfect place to explore Jersey's history. Climb the ramparts, explore the turrets and bunkers and discover the Hermitage where Saint Helier is said to have lived around 550 AD.

Jersey has a number of museums, including the renowned JERSEY MUSEUM, ART GALLERY & MERCHANT'S HOUSE, which opened in 1992 and is housed in an 18th-century warehouse.

Cycling around Jersey

Cycling is a popular means of transport in Jersey. You can hire one easily at Saint Hélier. Cycling around Jersey means over 60km of routes on greenways and small roads close to the coast, between beaches, bays and cliffs.

Transport

Jersey offers a range of transport options, from buses and taxis to car hire and cycling.
  • Buses: Jersey's public transport network is very well developed. It operates around twenty routes to get around the island.
  • Taxis: a number of private companies provide passenger transport.
  • Car hire: the car remains the most convenient means of getting around the island. Car rental agencies are located in the town centre. Beware: in Jersey, you drive on the left!
  • Cycling: cycling is a real institution for the locals, even to get to work. There are many cycle paths on the Island of Jersey.

 

Medical Information

Jersey has a reciprocal agreement with France stipulating that you will be treated as a resident of the Island during your stay. This means that emergency and hospital treatment at Jersey's General Hospital is free. However, there is a charge for visits to the doctor in Jersey.

The Jersey General Hospital is located in the town of St Helier in Glucester street.

The emergency number is 999 and 112 for ambulance, fire and coastguard services.

 

Language

Although some street names are French, the language spoken in Jersey is English.

Currency

All trade in Jersey is conducted in pounds sterling. All major credit cards are accepted. Euros are accepted in only a few shops. All banks change money and there are several bureaux de change, including at the post office.

 

Local time

There is an hour's time difference between France and Jersey, which is in the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) zone. If it's midday in France, it's 11am in Jersey.

 

Electrical sockets

Plugs in Jersey are British plugs. You will need an adaptor (which you can find in many Jersey shops).

 

Customs

EU citizens arriving in Jersey must have a valid passport. Driving licences are not considered valid documents. Passengers travelling by plane between the Channel Islands and the UK must carry valid photo identification.
Passengers travelling from Jersey to France must have a passport valid for at least 6 months at the time of travel.
Passengers travelling from France to Jersey must have a passport valid at the time of travel, no minimum validity date is required. However, the minimum validity date must be respected for both arrival and departure journeys.

As well as the capital, Saint Hélier, a busy city where you can enjoy shopping (with plenty of duty-free shops!) and nightlife, Jersey offers a wide variety of landscapes and secret corners worth exploring. Between the cliffs overlooking the sea, the peaceful bays, beaches, coves and hiking trails that will make you understand why Jersey is nicknamed the ‘’Island of Flowers‘’, you'll have plenty to do! Although the island is only 15 km long and 8 km wide, you'll need several days to discover it in its entirety.
